Clearwater Boat Crash Kills One Person, Injures 10 at End of Festival

The driver of a boat that appeared to leave the scene after a fatal crash in Clearwater, Florida, was not intoxicated but could still face multiple charges in the tragedy, according to local news media and the Associated Press.

Authorities said a recreational boat crashed into a Clearwater Ferry boat carrying 45 people after a sand-sculpting contest around dusk Sunday evening. The collision killed one person and injured another 10. The alleged driver of the recreational vessel was found more than three miles away. He cooperated with authorities and passed a sobriety test, news sites reported.

Emergency responders called it a “mass casualty event,” and multiple teams worked the scene. The ferry came to rest on a sandbar, and passengers were evacuated and treated for a range of injuries.

Sunday was the final day of the Sugar Sand Festival, a 17-day sand-sculpting festival in Clearwater Beach, near Tampa.
